SUMMARY:Cross‑Language Phonology in Dual Language Programs: Understanding Early Literacy Through Two Sound Systems
DESCRIPTION:In dual language programs\, students learn to read through the combined influence of both of their languages. Children acquire the phonemes and sound patterns of their home language(s) first\, and these established systems shape how new sounds in English and Spanish are perceived\, distinguished\, and produced — a predictable process of cross‑linguistic transfer. Because Spanish and English have different vowel inventories\, consonant contrasts\, and levels of orthographic depth\, students naturally draw on familiar sound patterns as they decode in either language. These are not errors but linguistically logical developmental patterns. This session equips dual language educators to use cross‑language comparisons to interpret early literacy assessments more accurately\, identify skills that transfer automatically across languages\, and target explicit instruction where phonemes diverge — strengthening equity‑focused decisions that honor the full bilingual reading process.\n\nGrade Levels:&nbsp\;Pre-K\, K-2

SUMMARY:Beyond One Language: Bridging the Science of Reading and Biliteracy.
DESCRIPTION:This presentation explores the alignment of the Science of Reading and multilingual pedagogy\, moving beyond monolingual frameworks to empower multilingual learners. We examine how foundational skills—specifically phonology\, orthography\, and morphology—function as interconnected systems\, leveraging the skills mastered in a student’s first language (L1) as a primary asset for acquiring new content in their second language (L2).\nBy strategically utilizing cross-linguistic transfer\, educators will bridge "the code" with meaning-making through semantics\, syntax\, grammar\, and pragmatics. We move past rote instruction to show how a student’s home language serves as the structural foundation for communicative competence. Attendees will gain evidence-based strategies to transform the Science of Reading into a culturally responsive biliteracy lens\, ensuring academic excellence across languages.\n\nLanguage: Bilingual (Spanish/English)\nGrades: Pre-K\, K-2\, 3-5\, 6-8\, 9-12

SUMMARY:Understanding Biliteracy Trajectories: A Holistic Framework for Dual Language Growth
DESCRIPTION:Biliteracy trajectories offer educators a way to understand literacy development in Spanish and English as interconnected systems\, rather than two parallel monolingual paths. Large‑scale research with more than 13\,000 dual language students demonstrates that there is no single bilingual trajectory\, and that each language contributes differently to literacy development because of its unique linguistic structure. The study also confirms that biliteracy development takes time\, with students in dual language programs acquiring literacy skills in their home language at a modestly higher rate than monolingual peers\, while gradually strengthening their second language over multiple years. This session introduces biliteracy trajectories as an asset‑based\, bilingual interpretive framework\, helping educators analyze data more accurately\, avoid misinterpretation\, and design instruction that leverages the full linguistic repertoire of multilingual learners.\n\nGrade Levels:&nbsp\;K-2\, 3-5\, 6-8

SUMMARY:Biliteracy Structures in Middle School
DESCRIPTION:At Volta our instructional middle school framework employs a two-teacher model in conjunction with a planned allocation model. This balanced approach ensures students are immersed in a dynamic and comprehensive learning environment. This carefully designed model is fundamentally rooted in affirming the students' individual and collective identities\, celebrating their linguistic and cultural assets as essential components of their educational journey. Our primary goal is the comprehensive enhancement of students' literacy skills across all four foundational domains of language: reading\, writing\, listening\, and speaking. Using the Skyline curriculum instruction extends beyond basic communication skills to include the critical development of socio-cultural competence. The overall design fosters high academic achievement while simultaneously promoting biculturalism and biliteracy.\n\nLanguage: Bilingual (Spanish/English)\nGrades: 6-8

SUMMARY:De las comas a las historias: estrategias para desarrollar el español académico con recursos abiertos de la UNAM
DESCRIPTION:Desarrollar el español académico requiere oportunidades para interactuar con textos auténticos y explorar cómo el lenguaje construye significado. Esta sesión presenta estrategias prácticas para integrar literatura\, audio y análisis textual mediante recursos educativos abiertos de la UNAM dirigidos a estudiantes heritage speakers y bilingües de los grados 9–12. Los participantes explorarán dos actividades interactivas alineadas con el Marco DALE de WIDA\, que promueve el desarrollo del lenguaje a través de interacción\, análisis textual y multiliteracidades. La primera utiliza el cuento “Bondades y peligros de la coma” de Carmen Villoro\, disponible en la plataforma Descarga Cultura\, para explorar cómo la puntuación influye en el significado y el ritmo narrativo mediante escucha activa y una dinámica colaborativa\, mostrando cómo enseñarla a través de la literatura fortalece el desarrollo del lenguaje académico en contexto. La segunda utiliza una Unidad de Apoyo para el Aprendizaje (UAPA) para analizar la estructura narrativa y apoyar la comprensión y producción de textos narrativos en español.\n\nLanguage: Spanish\nGrades: ALL&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:One School. One Vision. Creating Coherence Across Dual Language and Traditional Programs
DESCRIPTION:At Jeffrey’s Grove Elementary (N.C.)\, educators use the theme La Media Naranja\, two halves forming a perfect whole\, to unite Dual Language and traditional programs under one shared global vision. Like many DLI schools\, they saw strong bilingualism and biliteracy outcomes. But they recognized that the true finish line was broader: a school where all students see themselves as prepared\, valued\, and connected to the wider world.Achieving that vision required intentionally aligning student voice\, belonging\, and leadership across every program and classroom—not just within Dual Language. In this session\, learn the practical structures and leadership moves that helped build schoolwide coherence\, strengthen collaboration\, and connect language learning to real-world global learning and long-term readiness for every student.\n\nLanguage: English\nGrades: K-2\, 3-5\, 6-8\, 9-12

SUMMARY:Creciendo en Dos Idiomas: Cómo se Desarrolla la Lectura en Niños Bilingües

SUMMARY:Lo Que No Nos Enseñaron: What Second-Generation Latina Mothers’ Narratives Teach Us About Dual Language Education
DESCRIPTION:Decades of research show that many Latinx families desire schooling that supports both English development and the maintenance of Spanish. As part of a language education collective at the University of Illinois Chicago\, a group of Latina scholars\, mothers\, and students began organizing in spring 2022 to examine the Spanish linguistic landscape of Chicago and how access to Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) programs has shaped Latinx families’ ability to sustain cultural and linguistic practices. While existing research often centers immigrant parents’ efforts to support English development alongside home language maintenance\, this session highlights the experiences of second-generation Latina mothers who had limited access to Spanish-language education in their own schooling and are now navigating dual language programs through their children. Drawing on their narratives\, participants will explore implications for culturally sustaining curriculum\, family–school partnerships\, and parent engagement strategies that strengthen collaboration with a diverse range of Latinx families and support more responsive dual language curricula.\n\nGrade Levels:&nbsp\;Pre-K\, K-2\, 3-5\, 6-8\, 9-12
