Bridging Languages in Special Education: Linguistic Connections for Bilingual Learners Using the Biliteracy Framework
Friday June 5, 2026 10:00am - 10:50am PDT
Location: Room 353

This session will explore how to implement linguistic bridges in a dual language education classroom, with a focus on supporting the language development of diverse bilingual learners through the Teaching for Biliteracy framework developed by Karen Beeman and Cheryl Urow.
Led by teacher-author Milagros Otero and dual language teacher Mayralejandra Salazar, this workshop highlights how Spanish-language texts can be leveraged to strengthen language development, literacy, and cross-linguistic transfer for students with learning differences.
Participants will engage with a structured biliteracy unit adapted for diverse learners, explore specific bridging strategies, and leave with practical tools to support emergent bilingual students receiving special education services.

Dual Language is not a separate program: creating program cohesion
Friday June 5, 2026 11:00am - 11:50am PDT
Location: Room 353

"A discussion/dialogue with 2 DL administrators (Elementary, Middle School, Early Childhood) will come together to share expertise around DL program design and sustainablity. This session is ideal for admin interested in learning more about DL education from a leadership perspective. Incorporate that DL is not an add on, it is systems-wide and on the ground. Leaders are required to have a holistic understanding of program structures to protect the integrity of DL education particularly for EL."
